Under the BQE
Complete
Chapter Project located in
Brooklyn
United States
New York
Under the BQE is a participatory community planning initiative by Architecture for Humanity New York (AFHny). The project resulted in the design of a neighborhood-scale pedestrian and traffic safety plan near downtown Brooklyn. In October 2012, it was announced that the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) would begin the process of formally researching and implementing many of the AFHny team’s proposals. The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) was started by the Regional Plan Association in the 1930s and completed by Robert Moses in 1964. The mixed legacy of the BQE is well understood by New Yorkers who live, work, and commute through its bifurcated neighborhoods daily. In the Wallabout, Fort Greene, and Clinton Hill neighborhoods of Brooklyn, the BQE cuts an elevated swathe along Park Avenue from Navy to Steuben Streets. The 2010 census shows that over 37,000 residents live in the areas north and south of this zone. The perception of a visual and physical barrier of the BQE overpass is emphasized by neglected traffic circumstances on Park Avenue that unwittingly promote a speed corridor bypass, severing the neighborhood and challenging pedestrians, mass-transit customers, cyclists, and motorists alike. At the same time, the BQE provides covered parking as a year-round, all-weather amenity to the neighborhood. In April 2010, AFHny began working with Myrtle Avenue Revitalization Project (MARP), a non-profit local development corporation associated with the nearby Myrtle Avenue Business Improvement District. MARP had already engaged in substantial efforts to study the area, initially for potential parking revenue and programming. MARP also hosted visioning workshops, facilitated by partners SpaceBuster/raumlaborberlin (2009) and Pratt Institute Graduate Center for Planning (2010), to help the community conceptualize opportunities for the space under the BQE. AFHny was invited to build upon the visioning workshops and help reconsider the BQE as a broader community asset in addition to covered parking. AFHny volunteers researched the neighborhood, conducted surveys and counts, collected case studies, and began a dialogue with like-minded organizations and experts. This process generated a volume of research and substantial expertise among the volunteers. From these studies, it was clear that before other improvements could be pursued, pedestrian and traffic safety were a priority. In August of 2011, AFHny began the development of a safety plan for Park Avenue (a 17-block site), keeping in mind that interventions could be made in ways that achieved benefits across various needs (safety, social, economic, environmental). Incorporating feedback from multiple community charettes and other outreach efforts, the team identified areas of concern and generated conceptual proposals for streetscape design, parking and pedestrian zones, and green infrastructure to address these issues. The proposals were eventually streamlined into a site-wide safety plan. This plan was presented to local stakeholders and the community board, and it was submitted to NYC DOT with a series of recommendations. On June 19, 2012, Community Board 2 Transportation and Public Safety Committee members voted unanimously to support the team’s conceptual safety plan for Park Avenue. Local elected officials soon followed suit. AFHny believes that these suggested improvements are crucial to restoring the north-south crossgrain of the district, strengthening communities along Park Avenue, and to making the BQE less of a liability and more of a true community asset.

PARK(ing) Day 2012
Complete
Chapter Project located in
Chicago
Chicago
PARK(ing) Day is an annual daylong global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places. The project began in 2005 with Rebar in San Francisco and has since spread to hundreds of cities around the globe. A quintessentially “open source” project, PARK(ing) Day has since been adapted and remixed to address a variety of social issues in diverse urban contexts around the world. Architecture for Humanity Chicago looked to explore the use of public space in Logan Square, a Chicago neighborhood with one of the lowest per capita concentrations of green space in the city. Three parking spaces along Milwaukee Avenue were transformed into a meditation pavilion and relaxation deck constructed from reclaimed shipping pallets.

Lisbon
A word to all our international colleagues: Lisbon had a huge earthquake/ tsunami in 1755, and we don't know when it will happen again. So one of our present projects is to understand and discuss how we can have (and leave) a backup plan on line to give an immediate response while the city may be reconstructed. Bearing this in mind, Manila's tropical storm in last August was the 'mote' to start a discussion about Disaster Mitigation and Reconstruction. So we have launched in 2012 a competition among the portuguese volunteers, to present us proposals for transitional architectures. These proposals are ideas to be implemented/discussed not just in Manila, but always if/ whenever necessary. Let us know your thoughts. III) PASSA A PALAVRA! A AFH Lisboa somos todos nós, e todas as ideias por mais simples que pareçam podem fazer a diferença. Contamos contigo. ---------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------- VENCEDORES DO CONCURSO: As propostas vencedoras encontram-se já anexadas a esta apresentação, e foram enviadas para a AFH HQ para apreciação e publicação em newsletter. Bangladesh
Dhaka
The Luke water treatment plant with pure drinking water bottle and jar production facility, a custom-designed facility for a manufacturer, represents collaboration between a client and an architect in developing a spatial strategy that integrates production goals with the well-being of employees. Key design objectives focused on transparency & a single volume that makes full use of the site as well as the use of local materials like wood and bamboo, fully natural light & ventilation reduced energy use, and enhanced thermal performance. The architect responded with a single, large structure where administration and production spaces were integrated under one roof, breaking down hierarchies between front- and back-of-house functions. The wooden louvers with glass in southern and northern façade, as well as gardens give each user access to natural light and views of nature; the spaces also provide recreational areas for the workers on river side, Signalling a departure from the generally poor standards of places of work around Bangladeshi manufacturing sector. The Luke pure drinking water factory sets a new benchmark for the design and construction of factories that priorities architectural design and the comfort of the users without significant cost premiums. The result can shows possibilities with a strong business mandate that seeks to inspire other industrial persons to be more engaged and more passionate about the environment and the planet. this particular project could become a model of small scale social business with a greater cause in mind to provide access of safe drinking water. it can be implemented anywhere and make access of safe drinking water to School & College student, different Health clinic, Hospital, Food stall & Offices with a nominal profit margin. afh-dhaka encourage this kind of private sector initiative to help build better future. machine production capacity : 2000 gallon/hour method of treatment: Reverse Osmosis systems with UV Sterilizers.

A research stream directed at eco-concrete and ag-byproduct materials systems. The Alternative Masonry Unit (AMU) project is a coordinated effort between team members to provide design, development, distribution channels and support services for widespread adaption of low cost, high performance, and environmentally sustainable building materials for construction. The initial stages of the project will involve enhancements to the existing status of the AMU block material and product development, certified laboratory compression-testing of the block, and construction of a local building project (Domestic Beta). Based on documentation of the Domestic Beta, an instruction and training manual will be developed and post-construction analysis will be performed to allow for further refinements of the system in future. Domestic Beta: City Slicker Farms in Oakland, CA This project was initiated by Global Homes International, which donated their research and intellectual property to Architecture for Humanity to further develop the material as a resource for its clients and partners and the larger design and construction community. The next phase of the project will be an international adaption of the AMU product, including the construction of an International Beta project to further validate and publicize the use of the construction material in the larger market.

Nyegina Multipurpose Resource Center

Chapter Project located in
Nyegina
Tanzania
Chicago
Architecture for Humanity Chicago, in partnership with Tanzania Development Support (based in Dekalb, Illinois) and Umoja wa Maendeleo ya Bukawaya (based in Musoma, Tanzania) has prepared the following schematic designs for the Nyegina Library and Community Resource Center. The three-phase facility will be located on the grounds of the Nyegina Secondary School, a Catholic boarding school, and will also serve the government-run Nyegina Primary School and the village of Nyegina. Education remains a critical issue in Tanzania, especially in the rural Mara region on the shores of Lake Victoria. Nyegina Secondary School is located near the city of Musoma in northwestern Tanzania and is one of the few opportunities residents have to obtain secondary education in the Mara region. TDS has been working with UMABU for the benefit of the Nyegina Secondary School for several years. Their first project was an 160-bed girls dormitory and was completed in 2011. The construction of this center on the school grounds will assist Nyegina Secondary School’s educational mission to become a certified sixth-form institution. This accreditation permits graduates to attend local and international universities and enables them to pursue a wider range of career opportunities. The facility will also help address local issues of literacy, technological access, continuing education, and will provide indoor and outdoor gathering space for numerous community groups. The library and community resource center is designed and intended to be a focal point of the village of Nyegina. In July 2011, two AFH Chicago volunteers, Laura Bowe and Julie Force, traveled to Nyegina for sixteen days with TDS to assess the site and determine a program in concert with all the local stakeholders. In early October, they and several other volunteers met for a design kickoff charrette also attended by TDS, the results of which were sent to Tanzania for comment. After receiving feedback, a core group of volunteers worked for several months to develop a single design into a design development booklet. The purpose of this booklet is to lay the groundwork for the construction documents and present the vision of our project partners. TANZANIA DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT Tanzania Development Support (TDS) actively works to empower men, women, and children in Tanzania to lift themselves out of poverty through education, training, and community development. They work with indigenous organizations in Tanzania, and other supporting organizations, to achieve these objectives. Tanzania Development Support is a 501(c)(3) organization. UMOJA WA MAENDELEO YA BUKAWAYA Umoja wa Maendeleo ya Bukawaya (UMABU) is a community development organization comprising of over 1500 members from three wards and eleven villages in rural areas surrounding Musoma, Tanzania. They are committed to improving the quality of their community’s education, prosperity, and environment.

Comment by Anson Tse on May 11, 2013 to Contact Information

Hi Ashley,

I cam across architecture for humanity's "Design like you give a damn 2" publication and became really interested in your organization's work.  Being an aspiring undergraduate architectural student at the University of Toronto I want to get involved in your organizations work and see volunteering for your organization as an excellent opportunity to both involve myself in meaningful design work and further my education.

I would love to get involved but cannot seem to view the Toronto chapter's current projects; my own interests lie in the design process, specifically in communicating with communities to meet their needs but would also love to participate in the numerous other facets of your operation.

Being a first year undergraduate, my program skills are currently limited to sketchup, photoshop, InDesign, and the Microsoft office suite but I am looking to develop my skills with BIM software such as revit and autocad.  Also,I am currently spending the summer in Edmonton but will be returning to Toronto for the winter and fall terms of 2013-14 and may be spending the summer of 2014 in Toronto.

I hope to hear from you soon and learn more about the amazing opportunities the Toronto chapter has!

Regards,

Anson

Projecto Green Meeting Space para a APCL - Ponto de situação

Comment by Salete Cravo on April 26, 2013 to Green Meeting Space for APCL
