Pivotal Case Study House #7
Inactive
Sioux Falls
Pivotal Case Study House #7 hinges on the concept of movement. The idea stretches the plan of the home with relation to the linear site, allowing opportunities for inside/outside spaces. This stretch allows for natural ventilation in the humid climate and pivots along a line dividing the public and private spaces. The roof line wraps around the home breaking on the spine and continuing down to the ground, tying the structure into the landscape. Number 7 demonstrates the essentials of sustainable design, connecting regional characteristics, resilient materials and construction methods. The design was first conceived with the interior layout of spaces. It incorporates three different ‘zones’ of space, each providing a distinct function within the building footprint. Zone 1 (Service) - This area represents the working components of the house, including the bathrooms, mechanical and kitchen services. It houses all mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems, allowing the rest of the plan to be free for multiple uses and/or integration of spaces. Zone 2 (Spine) - The spine contains the circulation for the house, along with large storage units disguised within the thick walls. This allows for a double loaded corridor, maximizing space efficiency. With this storage spine, occupants are able to easily reach the storage units all within one section of the house. This helps cut down on the users need to maneuver in and out of tight storage spaces, especially within a house of such condensed size. Zone 3 (Living) - The living zone contains the master bedroom, flex space, and the living room. These spaces are free of all storage, with each room containing at least two walls of windows. Each room has access to an outdoor deck space, allowing the occupants multiple points of interaction with the outdoor environment. All north/south facing walls incorporate a sliding door system, allowing the whole house to be ‘opened’ and permit full air circulation. Number 7 is raised just over eight feet off the ground, allowing for small automobile access underneath. This eight foot high space contains concrete block walls along with a wrapping roof structure that aids in the appearance of a grounded house. The street elevation contains a pivoting garage door made of treated wood, which acts as the third device to ground the house Deciding to forego ramp construction, we have converted a boat lift into an ADA accessible lift. Taking the basic structure, we finished the top with a standard wood deck finish to match the rest of the house, a concept already done for boat enthusiast. This helped eliminate the 80 plus foot ramp that would be climbing and crisscrossing the site. We wanted the house plan to be number one priority, and not allow a large ramp dictate the site and interior layouts. The ramp can easily be concealed within the footprint of the house. It acts as a multifunctional space, both for necessity and leisure. If current or future owners do not see a need for a lift, it can easily be concealed as a deck, unlike a large ramp that would either be torn down or never used. The outdoor spaces breaking up the living spaces allow for natural light to penetrate deeply into the house. This will help tremendously as shotgun homes are generally located within close proximity of each other, blocking the majority of natural light entering through the sides of the home. A large front porch was incorporated into the design, keeping with traditional New Orleans shotgun home neighborhoods. This helps shade the interior space from the warm midday summer sun and acts as another outdoor extension of the house. Owners of the house will never be more than a few feet away from having access to the outdoor environment. All east-west walls throughout the 'living zone' incorporate a sliding door system. This will allow the entire zone to be 'opened' throughout the day, maximizing fresh air circulation. With the overhangs and the large expanse of sliding doors and operable windows, the house should maintain a very comfortable temperature throughout the warm summer months. Following the concept of movement, Sliding wood clad screens aid in the protection of the glazing during the harsh storm elements. On top of the finished floor surface, Number 7 incorporates prefabricated structurally insulated panels (SIP) in order to cut down on site construction and labor costs. Due to the modular layout of the house, most structurally insulated panels will be of exact or similar dimensions, making the prefabricating process simple and quick. Half of Number 7 is clad in a horizontally oriented reclaimed wood, wrapping the service and spine of the house. The remaining is clad in a vertically oriented Hardie Panel, finished with a deep red color. Two contrasting materials and colors express the interior layout onto the exterior facade. The site and landscape is minimal in respect to the using shade trees, shrubs and native grasses common to the regional environment. The area under the house allow for storage, a vehicle and a water collection system. The current system is for rainwater only, but with an upgrade to the home, a filtration system could be added for grey water. The front and back yards provide open space to allow for larger activities. The front yard acts as a multi functional space with its green driveway, grasscrete or pavers could be added. Number 7 is open allowing for visibility of the components that make the house function. Individuals can easily understand the sustainable ideas of the passive home. The operable systems and the connection to the landscape display the relation the house has with its environment and context without looking like a science experiment. Number 7 is plausible, simple and transparent.

Chapter Project located in

Miami
Camillus House provides hospitality and respect for life through direct services of food, clothing, shelter, addiction counseling, behavioral health and job training, and health care to persons who are poor and homeless in South Florida. Architecture for Humanity Miami has volunteered architectural/design services to Camillus House in order to renovate a compound of transitional shelters that will be the home of clinically ill homeless people. The compound is made up of 6 buildings that are in poor condition. AFH Miami will help Camillus House plan for a better environment to their future residents. BACKGROUND: [Target Population] Mentally-ill former homeless men & women who are part of the Camillus House Program in Miami, Florida. [Budget] Camillus House currently has a budget of $17,000. However, Camillus House has invited proposals for a vision for the project that may go beyond the stipulated budget. Once the schematic design has been established and can be communicated visually, allocating funds to cover construction costs will become a much easier task. DESCRIMTION OF CITY (Please see drawings package for site map & site plan) The project site is located within a quarter mile to the west of Liberty City. In order to provide you with local demographics and description of urban qualities found in the surrounding neighborhood, we’ve considered Liberty City’s history and statistics. Liberty City is a neighborhood within the City of Miami, Florida, United States. It is listed as "Model City" on many Miami websites; however, the name is rarely, if ever, used by anyone, especially local residents and Miamians.[1] The area houses more than half of Miami-Dade County's nearly half a million African Americans and Afro-West Indians (as of 2000 Census). Liberty City's boundaries are roughly as follows: North 79th Street to the North, North 27th Avenue (Unity Boulevard) to the West, North 41st Street to the South, and Interstate 95 to the East.[2] Liberty City is served by the Miami Metrorail at four stations: the North side Station on NW 79th St, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza Station on NW 62nd St, Brownsville Station on NW 52nd St, Earlington Heights Station on NW 41st St. Currently, construction is underway to expand the Metro from the Earlington Heights Station to the new Miami Central Station. DEMOGRAPHICS: In 2000, Liberty City had a population of 23,009[3] and 43,054[4] residents, with 7,772 households, and 5,428 families residing in the neighborhood. The median household income was $18,809.87. The racial makeup of the neighborhood was 3.04% Hispanic or Latino of any nationality, 94.69% Black, 0.59% White, and 1.68% Other races (non-Hispanic).[3] Excerpt taken from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_City,_Miami,_Florida http://www.movoto.com/neighborhood/fl/miami/33147.htm http://www.neighborhoodlink.com/zip/33147 THE BRIEF: [Program] Starting with these base program elements, develop and expand the program as you see fit to establish this facility as the permanent home for mentally ill men and women thriving as citizens within our community, configurable to the elastic needs of evolving groups through the duration of the life of these homes. Keep in mind that this facility will be a model for other facilities that will also house a similar clientele. There are existing buildings on the property, hence the word renovation. One of the major concerns is privacy within these spaces, as there are four duplexes comprised of two 1- bedroom units that will house two tenants each. Two other buildings are one-story 2-bedroom units. These will also house two tenants each. The total number of tenants that will be housed at Good Shepherd Villas will be twenty tenants. PARTNERS: About Architecture for Humanity Miami [Architecture for Humanity Miami] is the South Florida Chapter of Architecture for Humanity, a 501© (3) charitable organization that seeks architectural solutions to humanitarian crisis and brings design services to communities in need. Comment by Anson Tse on May 11, 2013 to Contact Information

Hi Ashley,

I cam across architecture for humanity's "Design like you give a damn 2" publication and became really interested in your organization's work.  Being an aspiring undergraduate architectural student at the University of Toronto I want to get involved in your organizations work and see volunteering for your organization as an excellent opportunity to both involve myself in meaningful design work and further my education.

I would love to get involved but cannot seem to view the Toronto chapter's current projects; my own interests lie in the design process, specifically in communicating with communities to meet their needs but would also love to participate in the numerous other facets of your operation.

Being a first year undergraduate, my program skills are currently limited to sketchup, photoshop, InDesign, and the Microsoft office suite but I am looking to develop my skills with BIM software such as revit and autocad.  Also,I am currently spending the summer in Edmonton but will be returning to Toronto for the winter and fall terms of 2013-14 and may be spending the summer of 2014 in Toronto.

I hope to hear from you soon and learn more about the amazing opportunities the Toronto chapter has!

Regards,

Anson

Projecto Green Meeting Space para a APCL - Ponto de situação

Comment by Salete Cravo on April 26, 2013 to Green Meeting Space for APCL
