Floating Doctors Floating Clinic
Current
Chapter Project located in
Bocas Del Toro
San Francisco
About our Community Partner The Floating Doctors Mission is to reduce the present and future burden of disease in the developing world, and to promote improvements in health care delivery worldwide. Our Goals Include: Providing free acute and preventative health care services and delivering donated medical supplies to isolated areas. Reducing child and maternal mortality through food safety/prenatal education, nutritional counseling and clean water solutions. Studying and documenting local systems of health care delivery and identifying what progress have been made, what challenges remain, and what solutions exist to improve health care delivery worldwide. Using the latest communications technologies to bring specialist medical knowledge to the developing world, and to share our experiences with the global community and promote cooperation in resolving world health care issues. About our Collaboration Architecture for Humanity San Francisco is responsible for the schematic design and development of a floating clinic. This clinic will be built on a 30' X 40' concrete barge. The main purpose of the barge clinic is to act as a launching point for the many, multiple day medical treks into indigenous communities. These remote communities around the region of Bocas Del Toro, on the Caribbean sea side, would otherwise have no access to advanced medical treatment or services. The barge clinic will also include multiple exam rooms, a pharmacy, technical lab, sleeping quarters for up to 20 volunteers and offices for the clinic manager. The barge clinic will be towed to four locations around the area, each time being anchored within the mouth of a bay for safe mooring. The local technique for anchorage is to tie the vessel to both sides at the mouth of the bay through the vast network of Mangrove roots, don't worry this does not damage the roots. Throughout the year the vessel will relocate 4 times to these locations, giving each region the required annual treatment period. The facility itself will be built with local materials utilizing local craftsman and techniques. With an abundance of sustainable hardwood, the interiors will no doubt retain a spectacular finish of the local offering. We currently have three basic schemes developed with the thought and drive of circulation around the small space.

Youth UpRising Partnership
Current
Chapter Project located in
Oakland
United States
San Francisco
Youth UpRising is a "transformation center in the heart of East Oakland dedicated to community transformation powered by the leadership of youth." Through a three-pronged approach of personal transformation, a systems changes and community economic development, Youth UpRising empowers the community's youth to create community assets and wealth, offering programs in civic engagement, career & education, health & wellness, and arts & expression. The San Francisco Chapter of Architecture for Humanity is partnering with Youth UpRising on two projects. 1) Neighborhood Visioning will directly engage the center's members and the neighborhood to develop a plan for the local community that will serve as an inspirational, practical template to sustainably improve quality of life through design. 2) Youth UpRising Facilities Expansion. The center has outgrown its current 25,000 sq. ft. facility and is considering expansion. Two possibilities are currently on the table, a three story building on the adjacent high school campus and a nearby warehouse. Through members' and community's input, AFH-SF will conduct a feasibility study, programming of the space, schematic design, and design development. Available funds for construction to be determined. Ideally, the construction of the project would engage the center's Social Enterprises program, which provides hands-on training through on-site small business development.

Kadampa Meditation Center
Current
Chapter Project located in
San Francisco
United States
San Francisco
The project entails completion of a feasibility study exploring options for renovation and/or expansion of the existing meditation center structure to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for everybody, and to beautify the neighborhood. The purpose of this feasibility study is to obtain potential funding for renovation/expansion from several sources including, but not limited to, the International Temples Project of the New Kadampa Buddhist Union (NKT-IKBU), an international Buddhist non-profit organization, and members of the local community who utilize the temple as a peaceful sanctuary and for drop-in meditation, formal study, retreats, workshops, and so forth. SERVICES REQUESTED: The client is requesting a concept design package to look at several options for renovation and expansion. KMC-SF is interested in the analysis of 3 options. The goal is to put together a package of drawings, diagrams, and basic cost estimation for each potential design option that informs budget, code relevance/restrictions, design impact, and construction timeline. PITCH: Everybody Welcome: Inner Peace in the Mission The Kadampa Meditation Center-SF is a 501(C)3 (non-profit) and no one is turned away for lack of funds. For all of us, there comes a time when we need to turn down the volume, put away the gadgets, and take a deep breath. In our ever-accelerating world, many of us are looking for a place of peace...both in our hearts and in our environment. The Kadampa Meditation Center of San Francisco is such a place. Former gang members and foodies; tourists and locals; hipsters and ex-prisoners - sitting together in peaceful contemplation. At KMC-San Francisco everyone is welcome. Whether Buddhist or non-Buddhist, we all need a quiet place of refuge, an oasis of peace in our busy lives and in the heart of the city. Situated between bustling Mission and Valencia Streets, KMC-SF is thriving, but has the potential to benefit many more in the community. By offering a welcoming exterior and an inspiring and beautiful interior, the Center can provide a place of refuge and reflection for the diverse populations of the Mission District and beyond. Locals and visitors alike will enjoy this peaceful city sanctuary for generations to come, a beacon of peace in our hectic world. OBJECTIVES/STRATEGIC CONTEXT: One of the primary objectives for KMC-SF in exploring renovation and expansion is to open up the facade of the existing structure. The goal is a more porous and community-friendly ground level that provides for a mini world peace café and community sanctuary for inner peace. KMC-SF also hopes to provide a parklet in front of the building at 17th Street between Mission and Valencia, a patch of the neighborhood that could use some beautification and greening. Additionally, expansion of the center might entail building up to incorporate additional programming and to improve the Center’s ability to serve the increasing interest in meditation and spiritual practice. The ground floor would include the community space with a library, small shop and mini world peace café, a kitchen, bathrooms, office space, and a meditation area for the public that would also serve as a kids/family meditation room during existing classes. The second story would include the main meditation hall, small kitchen with storage, toilet, and teachers prep room. A possible third story would include apartments with terraces and/or a shared green space.

Compass Family Services Shelter Garden
Current
Chapter Project located in
San Francisco
United States
San Francisco
Compass Family Services is a San Francisco non-profit that provides the tools low-income and homeless families need to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness. The agency's six programs provide services to more than 3,000 parents and children each year, 50% of whom are under age 18. AFH San Francisco has a long standing partnership with Compass. Developing many interior spaces for the organization over the past few years we have had the privilege of designing community spaces as well as private office spaced for the administration. Their current project is the transformation of a small, unused outdoor space adjacent to the community kitchen and kindergarten area, into a play space and productive garden. This garden will allow residents of the 22 unit transitional housing shelter to take ownership of a plot of land. The unique opportunity will lend a an educational component to the communal activities, from nutrition awareness to cooking and cultivating classes. This particular shelter is known for hosting children, so providing them with an outdoor experience will heighten their stay while the family receives various services and works their way to permenant housing. Located in a particularly dense area of San Francisco this garden will enable children to be outside in an area that does not have very many public recreational parks.

PARK(ing) Day 2012
Complete
Chapter Project located in
Chicago
Chicago
PARK(ing) Day is an annual daylong global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places. The project began in 2005 with Rebar in San Francisco and has since spread to hundreds of cities around the globe. A quintessentially “open source” project, PARK(ing) Day has since been adapted and remixed to address a variety of social issues in diverse urban contexts around the world. Architecture for Humanity Chicago looked to explore the use of public space in Logan Square, a Chicago neighborhood with one of the lowest per capita concentrations of green space in the city. Three parking spaces along Milwaukee Avenue were transformed into a meditation pavilion and relaxation deck constructed from reclaimed shipping pallets.

Coleman Oval Park
Current
Chapter Project located in
New York City
United States
The Urban Web, under the Manhattan Bridge, transformed an underused portion of the Coleman Oval Skatepark on Manhattan's Lower East Side, into a multi-sensory interactive installation. The inspirations for web's iconic design were influenced by the dynamic cable geometries of the Manhattan Bridge, as well as the chaotic street grid that forms the Lower East Side. It is our passion for humanitarian design that inspired us to take a minimally invasive approach in using ropes to create unique volumes and intriguing spaces to be enjoyed by all. While the web compliments the adjacent skate park, it also functions on its own to be used for street performances, or just to frame an urban room. The project was put up the week of October 20th. The project team spent the day putting up the installation and interacting with the Park's visitors. The team interviewed visitors about what they would like to see in the park. Our team posted the responses here, http://afhnypark.tumblr.com/. It is our hope that our research will lead to the park being updated in a way that will speak to the park's users.

Sojourner Center: Master Planning for a Domestic Violence Shelter Organization
Complete
Chapter Project located in
Phoenix
United States
Phoenix
Our chapter teamed with Sojourner Center to facilitate a design workshop with local architects, contractors, and consultants to master plan the expansion of their facilites on two campuses. We held visioning sessions, performed goal setting, and charretted design layout options for both sites. Prior to the workshop, afhPHX researched the properties and performed site analyses of each, which were presented to the group prior to the charrette. The results of the workshop were formalized into a presentation which is currently being used by Sojourner Center to facilitate funding for the projects.

Comment by Anson Tse on May 11, 2013 to Contact Information

Hi Ashley,

I cam across architecture for humanity's "Design like you give a damn 2" publication and became really interested in your organization's work.  Being an aspiring undergraduate architectural student at the University of Toronto I want to get involved in your organizations work and see volunteering for your organization as an excellent opportunity to both involve myself in meaningful design work and further my education.

I would love to get involved but cannot seem to view the Toronto chapter's current projects; my own interests lie in the design process, specifically in communicating with communities to meet their needs but would also love to participate in the numerous other facets of your operation.

Being a first year undergraduate, my program skills are currently limited to sketchup, photoshop, InDesign, and the Microsoft office suite but I am looking to develop my skills with BIM software such as revit and autocad.  Also,I am currently spending the summer in Edmonton but will be returning to Toronto for the winter and fall terms of 2013-14 and may be spending the summer of 2014 in Toronto.

I hope to hear from you soon and learn more about the amazing opportunities the Toronto chapter has!

Regards,

Anson

Projecto Green Meeting Space para a APCL - Ponto de situação

Comment by Salete Cravo on April 26, 2013 to Green Meeting Space for APCL

Get involved!!

Se tens experiência em acções para angariação de fundos e gostarias de participar nesta causa/ equipa, faz-nos chegar o teu interesse: lisbon@architectureforhumanity.org.
