LUKE water treatment plant
Complete
Chapter Project located in
Madaripur
Bangladesh
Dhaka
The Luke water treatment plant with pure drinking water bottle and jar production facility, a custom-designed facility for a manufacturer, represents collaboration between a client and an architect in developing a spatial strategy that integrates production goals with the well-being of employees. Key design objectives focused on transparency & a single volume that makes full use of the site as well as the use of local materials like wood and bamboo, fully natural light & ventilation reduced energy use, and enhanced thermal performance. The architect responded with a single, large structure where administration and production spaces were integrated under one roof, breaking down hierarchies between front- and back-of-house functions. The wooden louvers with glass in southern and northern façade, as well as gardens give each user access to natural light and views of nature; the spaces also provide recreational areas for the workers on river side, Signalling a departure from the generally poor standards of places of work around Bangladeshi manufacturing sector. The Luke pure drinking water factory sets a new benchmark for the design and construction of factories that priorities architectural design and the comfort of the users without significant cost premiums. The result can shows possibilities with a strong business mandate that seeks to inspire other industrial persons to be more engaged and more passionate about the environment and the planet. this particular project could become a model of small scale social business with a greater cause in mind to provide access of safe drinking water. it can be implemented anywhere and make access of safe drinking water to School & College student, different Health clinic, Hospital, Food stall & Offices with a nominal profit margin. afh-dhaka encourage this kind of private sector initiative to help build better future. machine production capacity : 2000 gallon/hour method of treatment: Reverse Osmosis systems with UV Sterilizers.

Pakistan Flood Rebuilding Grant Program - The Heritage Foundation
Current
Chapter Project located in
Khairpur
Pakistan
Karachi
Program Summary Reconstruction of 25-30 homes, in conjunction with the Heritage Foundation's Green Kharavan housing program. Number of housing units: 25 units and 1 community center Beneficiaries: 125 (housing beneficiaries); 300 (community center beneficiaries) Duration: 2010-2011 Design and construction grant: $32,500 Cost per unit: Background In the summer of 2010, many provinces in Pakistan were affected by enormous flooding conditions. The floods caused the death of 1,600 people and some 20 million citizens were displaced by this natural disaster. These devastating floods have had a serious impact on an already vulnerable population. It is estimated that, at one point, one fifth of the country's total land area was underwater. Much of the farming land, housing and infrastructures were completely destroyed, leaving millions of people living in precarious, sub-standard conditions. The population has since struggled with severe food shortages, lack of sanitation and access to clean, drinking water. View Pakistan Flood Rebuilding Grant - Heritage Foundation in a larger map Heritage Foundation: The Heritage Foundation, based in Karachi, was founded in 1980 by Pakistan's first female licensed architect, Yasmeen Lari. The Heritage Foundation's mission is to document and preserve the historic built environment of Pakistan. Recipient of the UN Recognition award in 2002 for the promotion of culture and peace, the Heritage Foundation began the Green KaravanGhar initiative to address community needs. Project Information: As part of the response to the flooding situation, the Green KaravanGhar designed low carbon footprint, low-cost nucleus houses. These typically consist of one room to accommodate 5 people, a veranda, kitchenette, W.C, and bath. The houses are constructed using primarily sustainable materials such as bamboo, mud, lime and stone. The eight-day construction timeline is made possible with the help of community members and teams of artisans and volunteer students. In the province of Sindh, the population that was already living below the poverty line, has been severely affected by the devastation caused by the floods. The Heritage Foundation will help the marginalized communities by extending the Green KaravanGhar initiative to the areas of Shipkarpur and Khairpur. In these areas, the beneficiary families will be selected on a need basis. The grant will enable the Heritage Foundation team to hold training programs for construction in indigenous materials and a basic livelihood and skill training centre for women of the area. More than twenty-five housing units were constructed as well as a Women's Center which will enable the women of the area to gather and participate in activities that promote livelihood and skill training opportunities. Funding Support In order to address reconstruction efforts funds for the building have come from a coalition of partners including Architecture for Humanity, Google and the Live4Pakistan concert, an online fund raiser developed by Bubbletank and Virgin Unite

AFH Portland is currently working with the Bridger School PTA in Portland with a feasibility study/pricing concept for an outdoor play structure. Currently the school has no covered area under which kids can play at recess. This puts a strain on their teachers, since the gym is used as both cafeteria and recess. Moving forward, we hope to produce a refined design and fundraising materials for the pavilion.

volunteering interest

Comment by Anson Tse on May 11, 2013 to Contact Information

Hi Ashley,

I cam across architecture for humanity's "Design like you give a damn 2" publication and became really interested in your organization's work.  Being an aspiring undergraduate architectural student at the University of Toronto I want to get involved in your organizations work and see volunteering for your organization as an excellent opportunity to both involve myself in meaningful design work and further my education.

I would love to get involved but cannot seem to view the Toronto chapter's current projects; my own interests lie in the design process, specifically in communicating with communities to meet their needs but would also love to participate in the numerous other facets of your operation.

Being a first year undergraduate, my program skills are currently limited to sketchup, photoshop, InDesign, and the Microsoft office suite but I am looking to develop my skills with BIM software such as revit and autocad.  Also,I am currently spending the summer in Edmonton but will be returning to Toronto for the winter and fall terms of 2013-14 and may be spending the summer of 2014 in Toronto.

I hope to hear from you soon and learn more about the amazing opportunities the Toronto chapter has!

Regards,

Anson

Projecto Green Meeting Space para a APCL - Ponto de situação

Comment by Salete Cravo on April 26, 2013 to Green Meeting Space for APCL
